3 Backyard Archery Games Inspired

Archery challenges come in many forms, whether it’s Dude Perfect launching arrows from a helicopter or Olympians stacking arrows at 70 meters. But backyard practice and organized competition offer many less visible ways to test your skills.

Let’s start, though, with an archery challenge that made it onto prime time through the Food Network show “The Kitchen.” The show’s two hosts competed in a food-themed backyard challenge.

The first challenge required them to make their way through large inflated pretzels by stepping only in the pretzels’ holes. Next, they had to use their mouths to remove two doughnuts from a string. For the final challenge, they used a bow that fired marshmallows, not arrows, to hit a giant frosted cookie decorated as a target.

Yes, marshmallow-launching bows aren’t technically archery, but it inspired us to suggest some challenges you can do at home.

Balloon Speed Shoot

If the target lacks room for all the balloons, use a stopwatch to time how long it takes each archer to pop three balloons. For added excitement, fill the balloons with flour or glitter. Photo Credit Kris Runner.

In this challenge, pin three inflated balloons to a target for each archer. The first archer to pop all three balloons wins! If the target lacks room for all the balloons, use a stopwatch to time how long it takes each archer to pop three balloons. For added excitement, fill the balloons with flour or glitter.

Archery Bowling

This game delivers all the fun of bowling without having to wear those funny rental shoes. Stack six solo cups into a pyramid in front of your target. Consider stacking them on a cardboard box for greater stability. Then return to the shooting line and get ready. The goal is to knock down all the cups with the fewest arrows. The archer with the lowest shot count wins!

Shoot the Apple off the Head

fun

Shooting an apple off someone’s head can be quite dangerous. So instead, let’s try a more themed version of this game with Halloween themed balloon of a Jack-o-Lantern’s face. Festive and fun! Photo Credit: Agirlandaboy.com.

Have you always wanted to shoot an apple off someone’s head? Here’s your chance to test your skills without risking a human volunteer. Use one large balloon to be the “head” and, because it’s almost Halloween, draw a jack-o’-lantern face on it. Then inflate a smaller red balloon to represent the apple. Attach them to the target and pop that red balloon!

These games help you spice up practice with a little imagination and simple supplies. Of course, it’s even more fun with family and friends, so invite them to the range, too, even if it requires visiting an archery store first to get them started.

And if these backyard challenges become too easy, increase your shooting distance or sign up for a local archery competition. Leagues and tournaments are often available year-round. If you’re not sure where to sign up, visit a nearby archery stores to get started .
