Sometimes we’d love to get outside to practice and perfect our archery skills, but for whatever reason, we can’t. That’s when avid archers might reach for something that connects the outdoors with the indoors.
If that’s your Plan B, we’ve found just the thing. A company called Miniclip recently released an addictive app called Archery King for iOS and Android. Watch the Archery King demo in the video below!
Archers will appreciate this app because it contains some lifelike challenges, and simulates the real thing in some uncanny ways, particularly target drift (wandering aim). Nobody can hold a bow robotically still, a fact this app realizes and builds into the game. (If you struggle with target panic on the range, you might struggle with it in the game, too!) The app makes each challenge a little tougher by adding wind, longer distances and virtual competitors of differing skill levels.
Speaking of competitors, you and a friend can face off on the virtual archery field. Just ensure you both sign in using Facebook, and that you both have a strong cell signal or access to Wi-Fi.
To start, choose one of the game’s two modes: classic and challenge. The classic mode is a head-to-head match against a competitor for cyber-treasure. The more money you earn, the more courses you can unlock (In-app purchases unlock those extra courses much faster). In this mode, you’ll have a time limit to complete your shot.
In the challenge mode, you’ll follow more of an archery circuit, moving from one challenge to the next to encounter varying targets, landscapes and weather. Some targets are moving, and the challenges get tougher with longer distances and faster-moving targets. The arrow’s angle is important in some levels. You’ll shoot at rows of balloons, and must hit all of them in a row for the best score. After completing each level, you’ll move on to the next.
You’ll also get opportunities to upgrade your gear, which could provide a significant advantage over your competitors. The best chance for adding great gear and experience comes in the single-player modes.
Although this app is fun and addictive, no game can substitute for a real bow in hand. If you want to try shooting a bow, visit an archery store in your area and start a new hobby, habit or addiction. Perhaps playing Archery King will inspire you to create some unique targets of your own that you can try in the real world.
Until then, download Archery King and take your best shot at some fun!
