“Arrow” Delivers a Double
Dose of Archery Action “Arrow” Delivers a Double Dose of Archery Action

Our favorite bow-wielding vigilante is back protecting Star City, and with a new team. “Arrow” Season 5 premiered Oct. 5 on the CW, with recruits Curtis Holt (Echo Kellum), Rene Ramirez (Rick Gonzalez), Rory Regan (Joe Dinicol) and Evelyn Sharp (Madison McLaughlin) joining Oliver Queen’s crime-kicking team by Episode 2.

As is custom in the Arrowverse, each recruit has a special ability, and an alias to match. Their vigilante alter egos are, in order, Mr. Terrific, Wild Dog, Ragman and Artemis. That’s right, Artemis, as in the bow-wielding Greek goddess of the hunt. And her special talent is – you guessed it – archery.

The double-dose of archery action should be enough to make you tune in. If not, consider these eight Season 5 teasers.

1. Teamwork makes the dream work

And Green Arrow’s team is expanding! Black Canary (spoiler alert) met her demise in Season 4, and Speedy nearly died, prompting her to denounce the vigilante lifestyle. That opened the door for Oliver’s recruits. And we must say, they make one heck of a team so far.

2. Bring on the new recruits.

Artemis’ character arc is developing, and we’ve seen some good stuff from her so far. She’s lightning-quick with her recurve bow, and has seen considerable archery action, considering she’s only 17, – the youngest member of the “Arrow” team.

3. Zip line to fight crime

You know the episode will be good when “the Hood” slides into action via zip line, which is anchored to his arrow, no less! Warning: Do not try to use your bow as a zip-line pulley.

4. Robin Hood: Friend or foe?

In this case, friend. For sure! No, this isn’t another crossover. The “Arrow” scriptwriters are current on their archery slang. How else would they pull off this masterful Robin-Hood maneuver with an arrow and a pistol? (Yes, we know. A true Robin Hood is shooting an arrow down the shaft of another arrow. But this is impressive, so we’ll let the technicality slide.)

5. Back to basics.

Were you paying attention to No. 3? Did you notice the casual Season 1 reference to “the Hood?” Yep, it was very much intentional. When viewers met “the Hood,” his goal was to wreak vengeance for the city and his father’s death by punishing (and in early episodes, killing) people on “the list.” Buckle up, boys and girls. The list is back in play, but Oliver’s not the one in charge. …

6. This guy is!

That brings us to this masked figure. Does he resemble anyone you know? A Green Arrow impersonator, perhaps? This hooded lookalike is known as Prometheus. As of Episode 6, his true identity was unknown.

7. Say, whatttt?

We don’t know the masked figure’s true identity, but we do know those throwing stars are his signature weapon. Thanks to Felicity Smoak’s (aka Overwatch) forensic prowess, we also know these bad boys are made from “the Hood’s” melted arrows from Season 1. So, whoever the impersonator might be, he has access to the Star City Police Department evidence locker. Gasp!

8. Again, say whatttt?

That might explain why Oliver feels he must brush up on his archery with these tennis-ball drills. Is there anything these superheroes can’t do?

Watch the Green Arrow, Artemis and her fellow recruits in vigilante action Wednesdays at 8 p.m. EST on the CW, or catch up on old episodes on Netflix or Hulu.
