The CW Network’s “Arrow” show returned from winter hiatus, and it’s packed with archery! So far we’ve seen three heroes plus a handful of League members wielding bows and shooting arrows. As if Oliver Queen’s “superbow” wasn’t cool enough, the show also features compound and recurve action, with “action” being the key word.
“Arrow” producers provide viewers some relief from epic TV deaths – including a moment of silence for Jon Snow (if he really is dead) – by bringing back Felicity Smoak, Queen’s IT technician turned fiancé, in the midseason premiere. In the midseason finale, Queen is seen holding a bleeding, unconscious Smoak. And then there’s the unknown grave, which appeared at the beginning of Season 4. Naturally, we assumed Felicity died when Damien Darhk opened fire on “Olicity’s” limo. But we were wrong.
Smoak lives, but she suffered a severe spinal injury, paralyzing her from the waist down. Although Felicity is adjusting to a new lifestyle, she remains a vital part of Team Arrow. And let me tell you, Star City has been busy! Catch up on the midseason sizzle in the video below.
The first episode features a battle between Queen and his arch-nemesis Damien Darhk, who paralyzed Felicity. During their confrontation, Darhk magically takes Oliver’s arrows from his quiver and shoots them into Oliver himself! Darhk ultimately lets Queen go, but the action is far from over.
Thea proves her archery skills as the team battles Shadowspire, among other enemies, including a bow-wielding burglar. Enter Roy Harper, aka Red Arrow, Thea’s love interest! A member of Team Arrow turned bad? Well, I never!
It turns out that Harper’s being blackmailed into stealing parts for a web nuke, which would ultimately destroy the Internet. The blackmailer? A dude named “the Calculator.” And he plans to destroy not just the Internet but the whole city! (We won’t spoil it, but this new villain has familial ties to someone on Team Arrow!)
Thanks to Felicity’s expert hacking, Team Arrow learns the bomb must be manually detonated to prevent the Calculator from reconfiguring it for mass destruction. Roy volunteers, arrowing the bomb and swiftly zip-lining out of the building to safety as the fiery explosion billows behind him.
Meanwhile, Thea’s health hangs in the balance. Ra’s al Ghul’s blade struck Thea a fatal blow in Season 3, but she was resurrected in the Lazarus Pit. Even so, the Pit is slowly killing her. It’s a long story, but the Pit harms its occupants after “saving” them. Enter bow-wielding Nyssa al Ghul with a healing elixir! But she won’t give it up without a fight.
Nyssa, daughter to Ra’s al Ghul, wants to disband the League of Shadows, which is currently led by Malcolm Merlyn. And she wants Oliver to help her overthrow Merlyn. Oliver, however, is reluctant because Merlyn is Thea’s father.
In a flurry of flying arrows and slashing swords, Oliver literally disarms Merlyn. He removes the League of Shadows ring – which belonged to Ra’s when he was in power – and gives it to Nyssa, making her the League’s new leader. Nyssa promptly melts the ring and disbands the League.
Nyssa then gives Oliver the Lotus elixir, and Thea is saved. For now.
At this point, no one is truly “safe.” We still don’t know who’s in that grave! We know it must be someone important to Queen, but his mother and father are long gone. That leaves Team Arrow – Thea, Felicity, Diggle and Laurel – and his son.
Yeah, shocker! (Chill out. You know as much as we do. It’s a long story still under construction.)
We very well might have to wait until the spring finale. But that doesn’t mean the remaining episodes will be any less exciting. If the first five are any indication, the rest of Season 4 will be archery-packed!
