Sure, you can do a lot with archery. You can become an Olympian or Paralympian. You can win a World Championship. Archery can also deliver tons of health benefits, and it can definitely boost your confidence.
But what about good old-fashioned FUN? You can do each of the following activities alone or with friends. If you’re shooting in a group, decide on a prize for the best shot and make it a competition. Here are 10 awesome ways to have even more fun shooting arrows.
Start simple: Shoot balloons
Archers of ALL ages love this game! Fill the balloons with starch, glitter or water to make all kinds of colorful explosions.
Change your game
Tired of shooting paper targets? Try shooting a foam-plastic 3-D dinosaur! You can also check out a field shoot for challenging uphill and downhill shots.
Shoot objects out of a tree
Frisbee stuck in a tree? No problem for archers! Find an old arrow you’re not worried about damaging or destroying, make sure the area around and behind the tree is safe, and see if a well-placed arrow will knock it down.
Try Nerf archery
Foam “arrow” darts. 75-foot reach. Pick a safe target and shoot for fun without the pressure of scoring!
This game takes archery to a whole new level. It’s safer than paintball, but along the same lines. Archery Tag lets people compete using “arrows” tipped with giant foam marshmallows.
Use your instincts
Ever tried instinctive shooting? This is the game Jennifer Lawrence learned for “The Hunger Games.” No sights, no stabilizers, no “help.” It’s just you, the bow and the arrows – Katniss Everdeen style. The best way to enjoy this is with a friend – and a friendly wager on who will hit closest to center!
Have a “holiday shoot”
One Connecticut-based USA Archery club hosts a “Winter Carnival” each year where archers shoot old ornaments off Christmas tree targets. They also shoot through obstacle courses to hit balloons and other fun breakables meant for the trash.
This awesome group activity for archers – especially at a party – knocks candy out of a piñata by shooting holes through it! You might get some shot-up candy, but it’s a fun target to drill with inexpensive arrows!
Newton-style: Shoot apples (but not off of heads)
Go old-school by putting an apple or pumpkin on a safe target, and see who splits it without knocking it over.
The floating pingpong ball
This one is tricky AND fun! T.H.E. JOAD Club in Texas uses a ShopVac to keep a pingpong ball floating in midair, and their club members try shooting at it. This makes one challenging target!
