It’s impossible to think of Robin Hood (regular or “Men In Tights” version), “The Avengers” or “The Hunger Games” without making the connection to archery. Some movies, TV shows and characters are synonymous with the sport while others include an unexpected archery element.
Here are eight movies and TV shows that surprisingly show archery:
“10 Things I Hate About You” (1999)
During gym class, Joey interrupts Bianca while she’s at full draw to ask about prom. In this classic what-not-to-do scenario, a distracted Bianca arrows her teacher.
“How to Eat Fried Worms” (2006)
Erika shoots a recurve bow and also shows Billy how to shoot in this movie about surviving fifth grade.
“Kung Fu Panda 2” (2011)
Though this movie is known for Kung Fu and, well, pandas, various scenes show characters shooting bows and arrows. Bonus: Peacock villain Lord Shen’s tail feathers are marked like archery targets, and he shoots them like arrows at his enemies.
Known mainly for using a pair of bladed sai when fighting, this Marvel Comics character also uses a compound bow.
“The Weather Man” (2005)
It’s not all rainbows or sunny days for the title character in this movie about sad Chicago weatherman David Spritz . Between instances of angry weather-report viewers tossing milkshakes and other fast-food at him from moving vehicles, David shoots archery.
“Henry V” (2012)
Tom Hiddleston played Henry V and shot a traditional bow in the BBC’s “The Hollow Crown” TV series. Fun facts: Hiddleston also played Loki, a shape-shifting super-villain, in “Thor” (2011), “The Avengers” (2012) and “Thor: The Dark World” (2013). In “The Avengers,” Loki famously catches an arrow shot by master archer Hawkeye. Kenneth Branagh, who played Henry V in the 1989 movie, directed “Thor.”
“Once Upon a Time” (2011-current)
Various episodes show Snow White/Mary Margaret wielding a bow and arrow and making fairytale-perfect shots. In one episode, a near-execution of a villain by bow and arrow is stopped at the last moment by – you got it – a fairy.
“The Dukes of Hazzard” (1979-1985)
Though this TV show is known more for the General Lee and, who can forget, Daisy Duke(s), it’s worth mentioning that the Duke boys shot bows. Also, Luke Duke shot a bow in “The Dukes of Hazzard” movie (2005).
Note: You’ll want to remove the quiver from your bow – unlike the Duke boys did – before shooting archery. For more tips on archery basics, check out getting started in archery.
